What can you expect on 13th August 2011?
Speaking last year about the 2010 Pride Parade Trevor Edwards, Pride's Parade & Development Officer said: "We have had a terrific response from groups and organizations wanting to take Part in what always turns out to be a joyous occasion. While it is always unfair to highlight any one entry over others, there will be some very eye-catching entries to watch out for. For the first time the RAF will be taking part in the Parade. Their theme 'Reaching Out - its not just us that are diverse, our jobs are too'. The public's appetite for men and women in uniform will be futher satisfied as Sussex Police will be on the Parade as will the fire services of the whole of Sussex, along with their colleagus from Kent, Surrey and Hampshire. There promises to be more fire engines than you can shake a stick at! The Parade is a visible manifestation of all that Pride stands for and contributions to the charity's educational remit."
Aside from the entrants Trevor spoke of, Pride 2010 saw a great dealof intrest from local community and charity groups. LGBTQ groups from both The University of Sussex and The University of Brighton joined forces to provide an exciting and eye catching entry and highlight the great work they do supporting students
Rockers Roller Derby raised a smile or two, as they skated their way to Preston Park clad in bustles, corsets and big wigs (the theme of the year being Pride and (no) Prejudice)!
AIDs charities were also well represented by the Terrance Higgins Trust and the Sussex Beacon, while other LGBT community groups spread the message of tolerance and acceptance, including MindOut, the mental health charity; Allsorts, the youth project; the LGBT Drung and Alcohol Service and Brighton & Hove Sitchboard.
There were also plenty of local and national businesses, as well as polictical parties represented.
Last year's Pride Parade was one of the most flambouyant and colourful so far - an we hope 2011 will be even more exciting and eye-catching!
Applications for Parade Entrants have now officially closed (deadline 17th June), if however you think you can still bring excitement and wonder to our 'Out of this World' parade please contact Trevor Edwards at the Pride Office on 01273 775 939.
